Eating Well During Chemotherapy
By Cook for Your Life · July 27, 2026

Small, frequent, and flexible beats three perfect meals a day.
Chemotherapy changes how food tastes, smells and feels. The goal during treatment is not a perfect diet — it is maintaining weight, strength and hydration.
Eat small amounts often. Five or six small meals are usually more manageable than three large ones. Keep easy foods within arm's reach: crackers, yogurt, nut butter, smoothies.
If food smells trigger nausea, eat cold or room-temperature dishes. If your mouth is sore, avoid acidic and spicy foods and lean on soft, bland options like congee, polenta and blended soups. If everything tastes metallic, try plastic utensils, tart flavors and marinades.
Above all, drink. Aim for eight cups of fluid a day, more if you are experiencing vomiting or diarrhea.
